A unique Tournament in Cannes

 Report by

Elisa Martinelli

On Friday13th Feb 3 tournaments were held for each category: Women, Under 18 and Outsiders Men. The winner from each of these tournaments would qualify for quarter finals in the World Carrom Tour. This time only few players could be invited at short notice but the organizers told me they hoped that in future editions they would  be able to extend invitations to just a few more of the top players.
All players for the pre selection participated at their own expenses. This hopefully also may change in the future if sponsors can be found. For the invited players Carrom Production took charge of the hospitality.
There were 7 men for the Outsider's event:  Miah Shaheen, Nazrul Islam, Mouraly Venou, Lorenzo Hurlimann, Paolo Martinelli, Jerome and Jonatham Leau. All players played against each other. Mouraly Venou of France was the winner with 5 victories.
For Women's event there were 4 players: Emilie Neuhauser , Florence Roumegous, Elisa Zucchiatti and Silvy Dumas. Elisa was the winner with 3 victories.
In the Under 18 category there were 4 players all from France: Rajou Mouraly, Tom Colomby, Kevin Sieger and Vincent Carcagno. Rajou was the winner.
These tournaments took place during the International Festival de Jeux in the Carrom Art stand and many members of the public were able to watch and also practice on carrom boards nearby. The winners of each tournament were interviewed briefly.
The following 8 players therefore took part in the WCT: Karnal Abdin (UK) Head of series, Pierre Dubois (France ) Head of series, Carlito Bollin (Switzerland) Peter Bocker (Germany), Gianluca Cristiani (Italy) Mouraly Venou (France), Elisa Zucchiatti (Italy) and Rajou Venou (France). On Saturday 14th February the WCT Quarter finals took place. A draw was held and the following matches were played and filmed one at a time. Claudio Motta was chief referee and Stefano Fabiano 2nd referee. The matches were played on basis of best of 3 games, 25 points or 8 boards, no time limit.
Matches and results:
1st session Pierre vs Elisa 25-0, 25-0
2nd session Mouraly vs Rajou 25-4 , 19-17
3rd session Peter vs Carlito   25-4, 25-2
4th session Karnal vs Gianluca 25-2, 25-0
The semi finals and final were played on Sunday 15th February
1st semi final: Pierre vs Mouraly 25-10, 25,2
Pierre scored a black slam in the 1st board of the 2nd game
2nd semi final Karnal vs Peter 22-8, 18-10
The small final was played in the Carrom Art stand and was not filmed but many people were able to watch
Peter vs Mouraly 25-13, 18-10
Final Pierre vs Karnal 11-10, 22,21
The final between Karnal and Pierre was very exciting. In game 1 board 7 Karnal was leading 11-5 and Pierre only just missed a victory the game ending 11-10. In the second game once more Pierre seemed close to winning leading 21-17 on the 7th board but lost in the 8th board by 22-21. The final, like all the other games was played in one of the auditoriums of the Palais des Festivals and was filmed with top equipment and professional crew. 4 cameras were used to capture every moment in HD and flat screens were supplied for the public. All in all it was a very serious and well organized effort and I feel sure the results will be excellent on TV. A small prize giving ceremony was held and trophies given to Karnal, Pierre and Peter as well as bronze medals for other participants. All players were interviewed.
I sincerely hope that all the effort put in this production will prove worthwhile and allow this venture to continue in the future. I wish to thank all the organizers for their splendid work and I feel confident that this will be of great use in promoting carrom world wide. All the players and other participants also contributed greatly to the friendly and fun atmosphere and especially the sense of optimism which in these hard times is a very welcome breath of fresh air not only in the carrom community!
Don't forget to take note of broadcasting times and tell as many people as possible.

Carrom Demonstration in Poland

Our Carrom demonstration was very nice. The weather was wonderful so there was no problem of playing carrom outdoor. We started at 1 pm and there was no brake up to 8 pm. A lot of people came and try to play but unfortunately it is not a very simple game. We were at kids zone and there was a little too much kids under 10 years old but they also try to play and were delighted when some coins drop to the holes. Around 10 Indian people came and we played carrom together. Maybe some  of them join our carrom group playing in Warsaw. The quantity of our webside visitors has risen after the demonstration. We will send you some photo afterwards.
Best regards,
